Completion of the Class Review

The purpose of this course was to help us not only better understand technology and using sources with that technology, as well as helping us with our understanding of how to handle problems in the classroom. Many of the things we studied in this class were based on the actions and behaviors of kids in the classroom and how teaching is changing to adjust for this and technology. Overall this class was very helpful and pointed many things out about teaching that many of our other courses have not addressed.

At the beginning of this course we focused on many TED talk videos and well as exploring the TED talk site on our own to explore more about the teaching world. We started to understand the importance of creativity and stability in the classroom. This was a focus that is important to cover and understand. In the world with an answer to everything in your pocket allowing the students to use this to their benefit and allow them to be as creative as possible in the classroom.

We used this idea in our own class when our teacher assigned us an independent learning project. Over the course of the semester we as students need to select and area of field of study to learn more about over the course of the semester. The projects spread from personal art to someones personal religion and even people learning things such as ASL and about emotions. The point of this project was to open the minds and creativity for the students to gain skills they wanted to obtain. As my ILP was baking I can take many techniques I’ve learned for the rest of my life. The teacher provide the guide lines as well as  due dates and we were aloud to be as creative and open with our subjects and we all thrived in the learning process.

With our own hands on experiences with this type of learning working we can take this forward with us as well as use it in our classrooms. We now have the ability to find out anything we want online, all we have to do is utilize the tools given to us by society and help our students advance with them in order to help them use an everyday tool like Google. Along with teaching its important to teach our subjects and prepare the students for things they will need and skills they will need in society.

This class also really focused on the resources teachers have at their disposal we designed blog pages, created twitter accounts, and even expanded our own social media worlds to fill our feeds with information relative with our studies. My twitter feed right now comes up with nothing but history and teaching information from specialist and other teachers sharing and searching for the same information. This has expanded my personal learning network in a way i can constantly be using my social media for entertainment as well as learning many things about my field of study.

When we created our blogs I was confused at first not fulling understanding the point of the course. I did not understand how much we would learn for one another by reviewing our peers blogs as well as understanding how to function one if we so chose to utilize one in the future. I used this new blogging skill as well as a personal learning network to help me in other classes this year as well. At the end of this semester I was assigned a long paper based on a sort of revolution that had occurred throughout history. It was similar to this classes ILP but in a much shorter period. I set up functions that this class taught me to better the information I was writing about as ell as finding multiple blog posts of opinions on the subject. This class has come in very helpful already. It has also helped me developed thoughts on ways I want to teach with ILP as well.

The class took a small turn when we went into the subject of daily creates. These were little projects given to us each day by a website d106. With these projects we did small amounts of work each day. These were usually involved with holidays or very creative and open projects that could be done on multiple levels of seriousness. I enjoyed doing the creates and I feel like if you could direct these in your classroom to relate to the subject it could be a very successful way to get your students prepared for the subject at the beginning of class. My favorite one of these to make was the mini movie one. I decided to do a haunted area one which ended up being kinda spooky and fun.

The next part of the course took us through our digital foot prints as well as how we should display our selves online. We were taught that once you put something on the internet it is permanent. Peoples lives have been ruined and exposed because of what they put online. We as teachers need to make sure we are protecting ourselves from people who would like to see us gone. If we have disgruntled parents and they attempt to find us online and we are being inappropriate or confrontational they could use that against us. They can also learn to much about your personal life and use it to influence other matters if we are not careful with what we are doing online.

Everyone who has had a social media site and even a family death has a digital footprint. When looking myself up online I found many things including Facebook pictures of myself and links to my Facebook and twitter page. I have a clean record and haven been in the paper all but two times in my life but many people were finding articles about themselves online. Even our none digital lives can show up in the digital world. My grandmothers funeral arrangements from the funeral home she stayed out were even online still stuff doesn’t leave the internet even if deleted most of the time.

In this class we went over many techniques to help our students expand their creativity including comic strips, independent projects, and even reading programs for the class. We also used our personal learning networks to find more new and exciting ways to influence the students to be more creative. Which is why I feel the last part of this course about deschooling is a mistake until at least after middle school. Students being in school gives them the qualities to interact within society as well as meet people and understand how the world works. I also believe it helps the students gain a grasp on qualities such as active voices and civic engagement they might not receive from learning on their own.

Over all I found this class extremely useful and filled with resources what will help me advance as a teacher.  I have learned the importance of creativity in the classroom as well as being able to understand ways of students being able to work on their owns for their own benefits. This class also introduced many new technologies that will be useful to use as teacher in the future.  I will carry many of these technologies with me to not only become a better teacher but also help me get my way though college.

Learning outside of School?

Is learning outside of school really a viable option for students? I am personally very against this idea as i feel schools should be providing adaptions for students. Schooling i believe is very important as a child not even  based on learning as more of a way to understand society. When in school you meet many new friends and begin to understand how friendship, relationships, and even people you dislike work. You begin to understand the real world and what type of people you will be dealing with for your whole life. That being said I think after middle school students should be able to decide for themselves what path they should go down.

Its very possible to learn and be a very “successful” person while teaching yourself outside of school especially in the world of vast information we live in today. My issue with this is its hard to get a job to support yourself without even a high school degree in the real world.  Most business look at it as a form tat you were able to finish the tasks placed before you as well as you being responsible enough to finish what the world defines as required information you need to learn. The problem isn’t what your learning outside of the classroom its the pieces of paper you need to “prove your worth” to society.

We as teachers need to make school a more viable option for all students regarding what they wish to do in their future. That being said int his class we did a Independent learning project with broad guidelines put in place by our teacher. This would be a good way to start and research more classes and other things we should implicate to help these students prepare for the careers they want over just the courses many of the students will need to take to college with them. We also need to allow our students to be more independent and creative in their work in order to help them pursue the information that will be useful to them in their future.

I feel like school is very important for many of the social skills you will need to get through life, that being said i think you have the ability to learn more and attractive more when being guided into what really matters for you as a students. We should provide less requirements or types of courses you need to graduate and more on the level of the courses. This is something we as teachers should push for in a world that has accesses to the amount of information we have just in our pockets.

2 Elephants in the Classroom that need Attention

The article 9 Elephants in the Classroom point out some very interesting issues our school systems and education process have. Out of the 9 2 really grabbed my attention because they are things we as teachers can change in the classroom.

We know that curriculum is just a guess.

Curriculum is often thought as something we have to teach and that we can tech nothing else but the curriculum. The first part is true. If the school system you work for provides a curriculum you must teach it. That does not mean on the other hand we as teachers cant teach them other useful traits of knowledge while still using the required curriculum. Like in history when learning about the stock market! We as history teachers could set up the unit to teach the history required about it as well as teaching our students about the ability to acquire and trade stock in simulators. When teaching about taxes and their implications on current government why not make the time to show them how to do the taxes as well.

We are confined to the what we are required to teach that is a fact. If we allow ourselves as teachers to become lazy that is all our students will get out of our classes. We need to incorporate more into the classroom that happens in the real world with their required studies. This is something we can change.

We know that grades, not learning, are the outcomes that students and parents are most interested in.

This one really bothered me as well. When we recognize this as a problem we need to do our best to change it. Grades are the standard for how well your child is doing in class, but not necessarily representative of where they actually are. Kids can decided not to do things in class for many reasons, but that doesn’t not mean they are actually represented in knowledge by their grade. We as teachers need to realize we are responsible and officially someone of guidance for these children. We need to be as involved as possibly with their academic life and that means being as communicative and vocal with the parents as possible. In order to help our students succeed int he real world we need to prepare them and their thoughts as much as possible for the real world.

Overall i found this article really helpful and eye opening to many of the things we will have to deal with in the classroom. We need to prepare ourselves as much as possible in order to be able to react and adapt to the situations we are thrown into as teachers. It will be very important for use to understand how to deal with many of these problems as well as avoid these situations as well.

Metaphors in the Classroom?

Using metaphors in the classroom is something that happens weather we realize it or not. This became very clear to me in the articles assigned to us for this module. Ultimately we use them to help us teach and it really will make our jobs easier in the classroom.

In the You Tube video posted below We have the ideology of what a metaphor is to understand even what I am typing is a form of a metaphor. The beginning and thin layers of what a metaphor is helps us understand that we use these things to describe something to give it a place and time to help us understand what it means.

We will use techniques like this all the time in the classroom. When the children are young we can use them to help learn how to do math and science. We can can teach with them when history when working on a long timeline to connect wars and public events thousands of years apart.

Of course this is how we teach students new languages as well. When teaching Spanish hello would be a metaphor for the word hola, and Devil would be a metaphor for the word Diablo. We can use metaphors to understand differences as well when teaching in the classroom. Explaining how the Ford industry and the Chevy industry do the same things but are owned by different companies would be a metaphor for monopolization being illegal.

Overall using metaphors in the classroom will happen whether we know they are or not. Its our job as teachers to find and use the best possible metaphors to help our students get the best example as possible while learning. In the article “Back to School Prep Guide: 8 Metaphors for a teacher” we see many metaphors of how teaching is similar to many other jobs and what they do. We can not only read these and see how to be better teachers but we can also make examples out of these to help our students under stand subjects more clearly.

Metaphors are a very important part to teaching we need to understand how to effectively use them in our classrooms to better help our students understand what we are teaching them. Not every thing requires a metaphor as well if we use this as a teaching method for everything we teach our students will be able to connect them but not be able to think of them on their own and develop there own ability to create metaphors.

Final IPL

For my last project I decided to do basic and simple Christmas cookies with my grandma this weekend. I didn’t want to get to advanced on everything because I want to use this post more as a reflection of all the work I have done this semester. As far as the cookies go they were delicious but by far not the best thing i created this semester.

The whole point of my ILP this semester was to get away from cookies and learn more about other pastries and baking techniques since i have already worked in a cookie shop. My favorite creation this semester was the ice cream cake I made a few weeks back. I love ice cream and being able to make home made ice cream and being able to mix it with cake made my week a lot better!

Over the course of this semester I made many great things and also failed int he process many times. At the beginning of our IPLs I didn’t understand why were had to do, or in a different thought, what was I gaining from this. I dint start to realize what it was until around my 3rd project. I messed up multiple times on fudge, on thought i was going to lose it. I had to go back to the store for more ingredients and even surfed the web for a possibly easier recipe.  After finally getting the fudge to set up correctly and the writing for that post began to come super easily to me.

I feel t

he most important project for me was when I would struggle I would always end up trying my hardest to figure out where I was going wrong because I was so invested into it. The ILPs taught me that we can teach ourselves something if we really want to know it. We can also figure out better ways for ourselves to lean on our own. If we are going to teach students and expects them to learn from what we are doing, should we not be able to teach ourselves new things as well.

Over all I thought this project was a great experience and I found it very helpful for my ideals on teaching. We are not teachers yet so their is still lots of time for use to develope our own teaching methods and thoughts, and its projects like this that  help us out the most. Hands on learning is the best learning.

Comic’s in the Class Room

Comics can be extremely useful for teachers in many ways! Not only can you create them and allow your students a more fun way of learning, but you can also let them create them in order to make a projects or even to create a presentation. I’ve had multiple teachers in the past offer comic strips in order to do a presentation for a class projects. Most of the time students wont put their time into these though because they haven been shown the correct resources to create one. I personally think they are extremely useful for many reasons, but creativity is the main focus when creating one.

When giving our students the ability to create something unique and original it gives them the opportunity to show us many things. Their level of creativity, how invested in the project they are, and even their feelings towards the project they are creating, are all things that teachers can see by assigning visual based projects. We as teachers are going to have to show our students more about the advantages of using technology for these assignments instead of being forced to be artistic to take part in the more expressive projects. The websites in this blog post are excellent when trying to manipulate and add extra abilities when creating an original piece of work using these software’s.

Other activities we can do in the classroom can also revolve around creating brochures, posters and even business cards. All of these will be helpful to students in their up coming lives, as well as many of their careers. As teachers we need to show our students not only how to effectively use the software but how to appropriately use them to. These websites and software are very useful in the real world and many of us will find ourselves using these throughout college and our careers and the effectiveness we can gain from these will help our students look better and more flawless if they begin practicing with these softwares from a young age.

Overall when using new software and technologies to create projects the out come can be better than most can imagine at the start of the project. Our jobs as teachers is to effectively use these and teach our students how to effectively use them as well; not only to let their creativity shine but also to help them become more professional in their real life and academic careers.

Podcast & Digital Stories

I love to listen to podcast! I never used to listen to them on my computer instead I preferred talk show radio, but once phones became as advanced as they are now I started to frequently listen to sports podcast while doing homework. It was something I enjoyed because of the mass variety of  sports entertainers that did podcast. Between NFL analysts, Fantasy experts, and players theirs a never ending  availability of podcast that I enjoy listening to. Not only in sports but political podcast are something I find interesting and good to listen to as well.

Not surprisingly many of these podcast are opinion based, but for me its something enjoyable to listen to while working. One podcast that stands out to me is Wide and Tausch which I listen to on a regular bases. They are a sports talk show that discuss the Packers very frequently. Im even currently listening to in right now after the Packers W yesterday. This is one of my favorites but I understand much of what they are discussing is opinions of the game and they very heavily side with the Packers. I cant really uses them as credible sources when talking about sports with friends, but at the same time i might like an argument they make or an opinion of theirs that I can look into more and build my own opinion. I think podcast are awesome but we have to be careful when using them.

Somethings I don’t like about podcast is many of them are opinion based and there for would wake them hard to be credible sources of information. That being said their are many good professional podcast that have credible information, but we have to treat these as another form of social media. People can say and post whatever they want its our jobs to deem them as credible sources.

I feel like using podcast in the classroom can be very helpful and fun for students to partake in. I feel video podcasts are a great way for a student to create a project. The ability to use these to our advantage is just another good form of technology we can choose to use in the classroom. We need to remember when using these that they are credible, not based on opinions, and good uses of time for the class we are teaching.

ILP Week 11

This week in my IPL I decided I wanted to fry stuff and decided it would be easy because of the access I have to industrial fryers at work. We all go to the state fairs or food trucks and see fried goods like Oreo, Twinkies, and chocolate this week in honor of all the left over Halloween candy i decided to fry them into pure deliciousness. I had never made my own batter but my coworker had a very good recipe that he used often for his own frying needs.

The key to frying food is let in the batter and how long you allow the candy to be in the fryer. If you leave it in the fryer to long the chocolate will melt and leak out of the batter which at that point would be to unpleasantly crispy to even enjoy. If you don’t leave the chocolate down long enough the batter will simply just fall of and you’ll have a melted piece of chocolate to enjoy with no breading.

It seemed some chocolate was easier to fry then others but overall my products were finished roughly after 30 seconds to a minute. The sad part is they lasted about half as long as it took to cook them when the waitresses found out what I was making! I used peanut butter cups, pure milk chocolate, almond filled chocolate, and dark chocolate. The batter was a simple mix of pancake mix with just enough milk where the mix isn’t runny but just thick enough to get rid of all the powder. The temp of the fryers i used were 350 degrees.

Overall from this experience I feel like there were two major aspects I got from it. I learned how delicate fryers can be when it comes to cooking baked goods in them. Timing is everything and if you do it correctly the fluffy chocolate filled teat will make your day. Another thing I learned was how to make a good consistent frying batter.  When it comes to frying if you have a solid batter and good quality way to fry your goods the only thing standing in your way of a fried treat is understanding how long it takes to make them the perfect fluffiness.

So far I’ve really enjoyed the ILP I’ve gotten to do. I’ve done things I never would have done without the encouragement of this course. Learning to bake and make other sweet goods in something I’ve been interested in but have never taken the insensitive of doing util this ILP.

Mindful use of Technology

i wonder what would happen if all of our devices crashed one night. What would we do with our free time without Facebook, twitter and snap-chat. Personally I don’t find trouble keeping myself off of these social media cites but it is starting to become a problem for a lot of the people I know. When it comes to how much time we spend on our phones and computers I think a major part is expectations of what we are interested in or want to know. When we have our accounts we generally follow our friends and then a bunch of other links we are interested in. I wonder how many of us are more interested in what our friends are posting compared to the other people or pages we follow on these cites. Is it easier to watch and learn from our devices then actually engage in person to person talk about the subjects that interest us.

While watching TED Talk “A year offline, what I have learned” done by Paul Miller I began to wonder how dependent society has become on their devices and how dependent they have become on getting their information from these social media sites. I personally fall victim to this. All of my sports and political news I see by following the major news and sports networks and its much more efficient then watching TV.

I personally believe we are in a time of mass knowledge being spread through the world of social media. With this also come the wide spread of pointless crap as well. We gain so much knowledge on these sites rather than just not be digitally active at all but we also see so many pointless videos and memes  it starts to become a time waster. We can adjust and adapt to these however. We can fill our feeds with useful information that can benefit us while using these sites which will slowly deflate the amount of unnecessary things we see on social media.

Overall spending to much time on social media can be bad and effect you in your every day life as we are starting to see in many people who just cant put down their phones and see what happening in front of them. Technology is a good and a bad thing it all depends on how it is being utilized and as future teachers its our jobs to stare our student in the right direction and start them off with good habits when using these cites and devices.

ILP Caramel Rolls

In My home town of Rapid City we have a restaurant called the Colonial House, and it seriously has the best caramel rolls I have ever eaten. I was discussing this with my room mate a few days ago and we decided we anted to try and make some caramel rolls. My roommate had a recipe we used and it made it really simple but at the same time they weren’t exactly “real” caramel rolls. We took some hamburger buns and and added the caramel and nuts then let them bake on in the oven. They were a good snack but nothing like the real caramel rolls at the Colonial house. I currently have a friends that works in their bakery and for this ILP I interviews him about his job and maybe a little in site on how to make better caramel rolls.

First off ill start off by introducing my friend Forest who is one of the few works that get sup at 4 in the morning to begin his job as baker. They make many goodies and treat at the colonial house and we can pretty much compare this restaurant to a family owned Perkins. They make pies, cookies, muffins, and many other types of desserts, but nothing is as good as their caramel roll. They use walk in sized oven, as well as a large area to prep their dough and other goods before putting them into the giant oven. Forest talked about how the caramel roll was definite the product with the most attention in the morning, as well as to-go orders they would do daily as well.

Forest was very helpful and even did manage to give me a few helpful tips on how to improve my own caramel rolls, but he could not give me any type of recipe to follow because of his jobs orders. I complete understood considering the circumstances!

I mention in one of my earlier post I had worked in a cookie shop so i do have some experience in large quantity of baking but noting compared to the scale of what happens at the colonial house. When all is said and done I just made cookies and this restaurant does cookies plus 15 other baked goods, so even though I have some experience I have nothing compared to my good friend Forest. Im also starting to run out of ideas on products to bake so if anyone has anything they would like to see me bake just let me know in the comments.
