The purpose of this course was to help us not only better understand technology and using sources with that technology, as well as helping us with our understanding of how to handle problems in the classroom. Many of the things we studied in this class were based on the actions and behaviors of kids in the classroom and how teaching is changing to adjust for this and technology. Overall this class was very helpful and pointed many things out about teaching that many of our other courses have not addressed.
At the beginning of this course we focused on many TED talk videos and well as exploring the TED talk site on our own to explore more about the teaching world. We started to understand the importance of creativity and stability in the classroom. This was a focus that is important to cover and understand. In the world with an answer to everything in your pocket allowing the students to use this to their benefit and allow them to be as creative as possible in the classroom.
We used this idea in our own class when our teacher assigned us an independent learning project. Over the course of the semester we as students need to select and area of field of study to learn more about over the course of the semester. The projects spread from personal art to someones personal religion and even people learning things such as ASL and about emotions. The point of this project was to open the minds and creativity for the students to gain skills they wanted to obtain. As my ILP was baking I can take many techniques I’ve learned for the rest of my life. The teacher provide the guide lines as well as due dates and we were aloud to be as creative and open with our subjects and we all thrived in the learning process.
With our own hands on experiences with this type of learning working we can take this forward with us as well as use it in our classrooms. We now have the ability to find out anything we want online, all we have to do is utilize the tools given to us by society and help our students advance with them in order to help them use an everyday tool like Google. Along with teaching its important to teach our subjects and prepare the students for things they will need and skills they will need in society.
This class also really focused on the resources teachers have at their disposal we designed blog pages, created twitter accounts, and even expanded our own social media worlds to fill our feeds with information relative with our studies. My twitter feed right now comes up with nothing but history and teaching information from specialist and other teachers sharing and searching for the same information. This has expanded my personal learning network in a way i can constantly be using my social media for entertainment as well as learning many things about my field of study.
When we created our blogs I was confused at first not fulling understanding the point of the course. I did not understand how much we would learn for one another by reviewing our peers blogs as well as understanding how to function one if we so chose to utilize one in the future. I used this new blogging skill as well as a personal learning network to help me in other classes this year as well. At the end of this semester I was assigned a long paper based on a sort of revolution that had occurred throughout history. It was similar to this classes ILP but in a much shorter period. I set up functions that this class taught me to better the information I was writing about as ell as finding multiple blog posts of opinions on the subject. This class has come in very helpful already. It has also helped me developed thoughts on ways I want to teach with ILP as well.
The class took a small turn when we went into the subject of daily creates. These were little projects given to us each day by a website d106. With these projects we did small amounts of work each day. These were usually involved with holidays or very creative and open projects that could be done on multiple levels of seriousness. I enjoyed doing the creates and I feel like if you could direct these in your classroom to relate to the subject it could be a very successful way to get your students prepared for the subject at the beginning of class. My favorite one of these to make was the mini movie one. I decided to do a haunted area one which ended up being kinda spooky and fun.
The next part of the course took us through our digital foot prints as well as how we should display our selves online. We were taught that once you put something on the internet it is permanent. Peoples lives have been ruined and exposed because of what they put online. We as teachers need to make sure we are protecting ourselves from people who would like to see us gone. If we have disgruntled parents and they attempt to find us online and we are being inappropriate or confrontational they could use that against us. They can also learn to much about your personal life and use it to influence other matters if we are not careful with what we are doing online.
Everyone who has had a social media site and even a family death has a digital footprint. When looking myself up online I found many things including Facebook pictures of myself and links to my Facebook and twitter page. I have a clean record and haven been in the paper all but two times in my life but many people were finding articles about themselves online. Even our none digital lives can show up in the digital world. My grandmothers funeral arrangements from the funeral home she stayed out were even online still stuff doesn’t leave the internet even if deleted most of the time.
In this class we went over many techniques to help our students expand their creativity including comic strips, independent projects, and even reading programs for the class. We also used our personal learning networks to find more new and exciting ways to influence the students to be more creative. Which is why I feel the last part of this course about deschooling is a mistake until at least after middle school. Students being in school gives them the qualities to interact within society as well as meet people and understand how the world works. I also believe it helps the students gain a grasp on qualities such as active voices and civic engagement they might not receive from learning on their own.
Over all I found this class extremely useful and filled with resources what will help me advance as a teacher. I have learned the importance of creativity in the classroom as well as being able to understand ways of students being able to work on their owns for their own benefits. This class also introduced many new technologies that will be useful to use as teacher in the future. I will carry many of these technologies with me to not only become a better teacher but also help me get my way though college.
